Employment
- February 2008 — Present day: Twofour Digital Ltd — Web Developer
-
I currently work for a new media company, producing websites for their various clients.
I code in ASP.NET, C# and SQL Server, and often deal with web services as well.
-
My work at Twofour Digital is varied, due to the array of different clients the company deals with.
As a result I have to be very flexible, able to quickly pick up existing projects to make changes as needed and able to deal with requirements at various levels of detail.
- January 2007 — February 2008: Centennial Software Ltd — Web Developer
-
Centennial Software Ltd are an international software company, whose main product deals with the management of hardware and software assets within companies.
My job was to code in ASP.NET, using C# and SQL Server to enhance the web reporting aspect of the product, which allows administrators to easily access the information they require.
-
The projects were usually based on single line requirements, and through meetings with the Project Manager and other key business users I helped establish exact specifications and committed to strict deadlines.
The projects generally lasted 6 months from initial requirements through to RTM. I produced use cases and the Functional Specification for the work required, and then coded against them once the Product Manager had committed to the final draft.
Once in the development phase of a project, I produced weekly builds which were given to the Test Team who raised any bugs found through Mantis (their bug tracking product), which I subsequently fixed.
I also liaised with support to fix any issues that were raised by customers using previous versions of the product, and either rolled the fix into the next release or helped create a patch for the customer, depending on the severity of the problem.
- September 2004 — December 2006: Direct Wines Ltd. — Web Developer.
-
My position as a web developer involved working in a team of two main developers, with a team of six content providers below us.
My job was to maintain and enhance the code base behind the 21 websites, administer the SQL Server 2000 and 2005 databases, and also to ensure the smooth running of the development environments.
-
Day to day work involved coding in C#, ASP.NET and SQL, as well as some VBScript for ASP.
I was responsible for adding pages, maintaining the current XML/XSLT and HTML front-end code and the code behind the Content Management Systems that the content team used to update the website.
-
All the websites ran on IIS, which I helped upgrade from IIS5 to IIS6 (I gained strong IIS skills from this).
The websites relied heavily on ad-hoc SQL, and I worked to increase the focus on stored procedures (both .NET and T-SQL SPs) to improve performance.
My SQL Server maintenance involved checking the operation of scheduled tasks, performance monitoring, index tuning and data management, and regularly working with DTS.
-
I also administered the version control system (Visual SourceSafe 2005) - setting user permissions, and creating and housekeeping projects.
- September 2003 — September 2004: Direct Wines Limited — Web Engineer.
-
Before being promoted to Web Development, I worked for the E-Commerce team, managing site content.
I also regularly used Photoshop, Visual Studio and eXcelon Stylus Studio for XSLT development.
-
My job involved liaising with marketing representatives of the business, external companies such as BA, AirMiles, Mint and First Direct, and the Web Development team.
I produced images and HTML to keep site content fresh across all of our core sites, and those of our business partners, and also to drive recruitment campaigns.
I also produced branded websites for new business partners using my ASP, XML and XSL skills when the Web Development team were short of resources, and this helped gain my promotion.
